Ouch!

I ordered some Moos - I thought of putting them as sort of price tags to the pieces that are to be sold at our Xmas market. However, I was too quick writing down my data and pushing the order button - there is a misspelling on them. How daft can you be without it hurting..... It is only one small letter too many, but it sure doesn't look very professional to have a Moo with a wrong blog address on it (of all things!).

Ich habe ein paar Moos bestellt - ich wollte sie als Preisanhänger an die Dinge hängen, die auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt verkauft werden sollen. Allerdings war ich zu schnell beim Tippen der Daten und vor allem beim Drücken des Bestellknopfes - es ist ein Tippfehler drauf! Wie blöd kann man eigentlich sein ohne daß es wehtut? Es ist nur ein kleiner Buchstabe zu viel, aber ausgerechnet in der Bloganschrift. Und es sieht ja wohl nicht sehr professionell aus, wenn man einen Anhänger mit korrigierten Daten hat.....

Ornaments swap

Well, today our exhibition closed and I will have some more time to work on my own projects, finally. I managed however to participate in an ornaments swap organized by Beate Knappe. This is an example of the ones I made. I am really looking forward to what I am going to receive.

Heute hat unsere Ausstellung geschlossen und ich werde endlich wieder Zeit haben, ein wenig an meinen eigenen Projekten zu arbeiten. Allerdings habe ich es geschafft, an einem Ornamente Tausch teilzunehmen, der von Beate Knappe organisiert wurde. Dies ist ein Beispiel der Teile, die ich gemacht habe. Bin schon sehr gespannt, was ich im Austausch erhalten werde.

Second quilt for exhibition

Much later than promised the photos of my second quilt. I wanted to make the pictures upon setting up the exhibition, took my camera with me and upon making, or rather trying to make the first photo realized that I had left the memory card of my camera at home - DUH! Nevertheless, here they are: The palace of the Winter Queen from Andersen's fairy tale. I have always loved this tale in particular and wanted to make a quilt from this theme. When attending the "houses" class of Gabi Mett I finally had the opportunity to do so with professional help.

Viel später als versprochen hier nun die angekündigten Bilder vom zweiten Quilt in der Ausstellung. Eigentlich sollten die Fotos schon beim Aufbau entstehen, aber da stellte ich dann fest, daß ich zwar die Kamera mitgebracht hatte, nicht aber die Speicherkarte :-( Der Quilt zeigt das Schloß der Schneekönigin aus Andersens Märchen. Ich habe dieses spezielle Märchen schon immer geliebt und wollte irgendwann einmal einen Quilt mit einem Thema daraus machen. Als ich dann am Kurs "Häuser" von Gabi Mett teilnahm, bot sich endlich die Gelegenheit, dies mit professioneller Hilfe auch zu verwirklichen.

Exhibition

This morning our exhibition was opened. The occasion is a special one: It is our 25th anniversary as a group (Grünstadt Quilters). With this we are one of the oldest, if not the oldest patchwork group in Germany. It was quite nice - the usual speeches (in the picture by our founder, Shirley Herzer), some music, even a cheque from the major of our town to support our next project. This year's raffle quilt is especially beautiful with those different stars.


Heute morgen wurde unsere Ausstellung eröffnet. Der Anlass ist schon etwas Besonderes: Unsere Gruppe (Grünstadt Quilters) feiert ihr 25jähriges Bestehen. Damit sind wir eine der ältesten, wenn nicht sogar die älteste Patchworkgruppe Deutschlands. Es war recht nett - die üblichen Reden (auf dem Bild unsere Gründerin, Shirley Herzer), Musik, und sogar ein Scheck vom Bürgermeister unserer Stadt, um uns bei unserem nächsten Projekt zu unterstützen. Der Verlosungsquilt in diesem Jahr ist besonders schön mit seinen vielen unterschiedlichen Sternen.

Mother Nature

This is a small quilt I made for the coming exhibition of our local quilting group. It was made by free cutting the fabric and sewing it together "as it came". I learnt this in a class with Heide Stoll-Weber several years ago. I really like this easygoing way to put blocks together. Since the colors reminded me of earth and autumn leaves I called it "Mother Nature". There is another quilt I made for the exhibition. This is a theme from an Andersen fairytale and being white on white has to wait for daylight to be properly photographed. I will blog the pictures tomorrow. In the meantime you may try to guess what fairytale I am talking about.


Diesen kleinen Quilt habe ich für die kommende Ausstellung unserer Quiltgruppe gemacht. Die Technik ist eine freie Schneidemethode, die ich vor einiger Zeit in einem Kurs bei Heide Stoll-Weber lernte. Ich mag diese sehr einfache Methode, Blocks zusammenzustellen. Da mich die Farben an Erde und Herbstblätter erinnerten, habe ich ihn "Mutter Natur" genannt. Ein zweiter Quilt für die Ausstellung basiert auf einem Märchen von Andersen. Da er weiß auf weiß ist, muß ich auf Tageslicht warten, um ihn fotografieren zu können. Ich werde die Bilder morgen hochladen. In der Zwischenzeit kann schon einmal geraten werden, um welches Märchen es sich wohl handeln mag.

New playthings

Yesterday I was in Wiesbaden and visited the great trade show for hobby artists. This is an event I go to every year with two friends of mine. We have great fun, sometimes attending a workshop, too. (Not this time though.) I bought several small items: Some color for stamping, two boxes of buttons for my vintage projects, several stickers for Christmas cards, some yarn for my embellisher, a brush with a water tank for my watercolor pens. The colorful pieces are tiny spools with thread; they make nice beads or embellishments. I also found some nice stamps, but these were bought by my friend for my birthday, so I will have to wait for them some days yet.


Gestern war ich in Wiesbaden auf der Kreativ Welt. Ich besuche diese Ausstellung jedes Jahr mit zwei Freundinnen. Wir machen uns einen schönen Tag, und manchmal besuchen wir auch einen Workshop. (Gestern allerdings nicht.) Ich habe ein paar Kleinigkeiten gekauft: Stempelfarbe, zwei Dosen mit Knöpfen, ein paar Weihnachtssticker, ein wenig Spezialgarne für meine Embellisher und einen Pinsel mit Wassertank für meine Aquarellstifte. Die bunten Dinger in der Tüte sind kleine Fadenspulen, die als Perlen eingesetzt werden können. Ich habe auch ein paar nette Stempel entdeckt. Die hat allerdings meine Freundin gekauft, um sie mir zum Geburtstag zu schenken.

Miniquilt

This small quilt was made during an online class with Terri (see older post regarding paper quilts) on mixed media collage. There isn't much mixed media in there yet (just the tendrils from the jellyfish. However, this is only lesson 1, so there will be more to come.


Dieser Miniquilt ist das Ergebnis der ersten Lektion eines Onlinekurses bei Terri (siehe auch älterer Post bezüglich Papierquilts) zum Thema mixed media collage. So sehr viel mixed media ist hier noch nicht versammelt (nur die Tentakeln der Quallen), aber der Kurs geht ja auch noch weiter.

Mainau

We were invited to a wedding this weekend. The ceremonies took place on the isle of Mainau, lake Constance. The weather was absolutely beautiful after the mist had cleared. (In autumn you very often have mist there right past the middle of the day.) I love this isle because of it's marvelous trees. They even have several redwood trees there - I don't know if there is another place in Germany where you can see these giants among trees. Don't those strange creeping trees just look as if they have escaped from Moria or Mordor?


Wir waren an diesem Wochenende zu einer Hochzeit eingeladen, die auf der Insel Mainau im Bodensee stattfand. Ich liebe diese Insel, und zwar wegen ihrer Bäume. Es gibt dort sogar die Baumriesen aus den USA, die Redwood-Bäume. Ich weiß nicht, ob man sie noch irgendwo in Deutschland bewundern kann. Das Wetter war fantastisch, wenn auch der Nebel erst weit nach Mittag endlich ganz verzogen war. Sehen diese seltsam kriechenden Bäume nicht aus, als wären sie aus Moria oder Mordor?

I did it again!

Like last year I am beginning to embellish and stitch small clutch bags made of felt and lined with batik fabric. A friend of mine will sell them during our X-mas market. This one will be for me, though.

Wie im vergangen Jahr fange ich wieder an, kleine Theatertaschen zu arbeiten. Die Außenseite wird mit der Embellisher bearbeitet, und die Tasche selbst wird mit Batikstoff gefüttert. Eine Freundin wird sie auf unserem hiesigen Weihnachtsmarkt verkaufen. Diese allerdings ist für mich.

Sunrise

So beautiful was the sunrise this morning! I couldn't resist taking a photo - just slouched outside in my pyjama (and boy, it was still cold!) and made this.


So schön war heute morgen der Sonnenaufgang. Ich konnte einfach nicht widerstehen - ich bin noch im Schlafanzug auf die Terrasse geschlappt und schoss dieses Foto (und mein lieber Freund, es war noch ganz schön kalt!).

Wine country

We are living in a wine country. This time of the year, when the sun is shining, bus loads of tourist are logged here. We have been living here for 15 years now and in the meantime I call it home. Today we cruised through the sunshine, visited several small villages and bathed in light. It truly was a beautiful day.

Wir leben in einem Weinland. Vor 15 Jahren sind wir hierher gekommen, und inzwischen ist es meine Heimat geworden. Zu dieser Jahreszeit werden ganze Busladungen von Touristen hierher gekarrt. Wir fuhren heute gemütlich durch den Sonnenschein, besuchten einige pittoreske Dörfer und sogen die Sonne in uns auf. Es war ein wirklich wunderschöner Tag.

Online class with Debbie Babin

I am participating in an online class with Debbie Babin, called "Textile Art with Pizzaz". This is real hard work. Exercises concerning color, value, shades, perspective, texture. Different ways of appliqué. But it is also worth it - this is the first exercise in form of a miniquilt, far from "pizzaz", but quite nice.

Derzeit nehme ich an einem Onlinekurs von Debbie Babin teil: "Textile Kunst mit Pep" (ich nehme an, so übersetzt man das "Pizzaz" am besten). Der Kurs ist recht arbeitsintensiv mit vielen Übungen zu Farbe, Farbabstufung, Perspektive und Textur. Verschiedene Möglichkeiten des Applizierens. Allerdings lohnt es sich auch - der kleine Quilt ist das Ergebnis einer ersten Applikationsübung. Zwar noch weit von "Pep" entfernt, aber trotzdem ganz nett schon.

Summer moved on

Well, there's no denying it - autumn is there, and summer is gone. I love the autumn, especially the colors and the smells. Autumn to me is abundance. But there are days that really are only gray, wet, much too cool. They hint at winter and times where the dark hours outnumber the light quite a lot.
I went to cinema with a friend these days. (We watched "WALL.E", and this sure is a terrific film for an animated film - especially the puns and references to all those great scifi films are fun.) Behind us sat some teenager girls. One of these said: Now tea time has come again. Her friend was a little bit perplexed and asked what she meant. Why, she said, now is the time to snuggle up at home and light candles and drink tea! She is absolutely right. This is tea time.
The song by the group "aha" really hits this feeling very well.

Keine Frage, der Herbst ist da, der Sommer endgültig vorbei. Eigentlich liebe ich den Herbst, seine Farben, seine Gerüche. Herbst ist für mich die Zeit des Überflusses. Allerdings gibt es jetzt auch Tage, die einfach nur eklig sind - zu naß, zu kalt, zu trüb. Die dunklen Stunden fangen an, die hellen bei weitem zu übertreffen.
Ich war dieser Tage mit einer Freundin im Kino. (Wir schauten uns "WALL.E" an, ein wirklich netter Film für einen Zeichentrickfilm. Besonders witzig sind all die Referenzen zu den SciFi-Filmen der Vergangenheit.) Hinter uns saß eine Reihe von Teenagern, und eine meinte zu ihrer Freundin, daß jetzt die Teezeit wieder angebrochen sei. Diese war etwas perplex, bis das Mädchen erklärte: Jetzt muß man einfach Kerzen anzünden und Tee trinken. Sie hat ja so Recht!
Die Gruppe "aha" hat für meinen Geschmack die Melancholie dieser Jahreszeit unvergleichlich gut eingefangen.

Birthday book

So, my friend's birthday has come and gone, and I think it is "safe" to show the other photos from the book I made for her. The theme was "friendship" - I added stamped proverbs about friendship as well as some thoughts of my own. Collage is still rather new for me, so I hope she likes what I made. We will meet at the end of this month (finally, one of our usual annual meetings this year did not take place) and she will tell me.

Der Geburtstag meiner Freundin ist vorbei, so dass ich jetzt die restlichen Fotos von dem Büchlein, das ich für sie gemacht habe, hier zeigen kann. Zum Thema "Freundschaft" habe ich sowohl bekannte Sprüche als auch eigene Gedanken eingebracht. Ich hoffe sehr, daß ihr das Ergebnis gefällt. Wir treffen uns Ende dieses Monats, und dann werde ich es erfahren.

The Wall

Does anybody know the book "The Wall" by Marlen Haushofer? It is very disturbing literature - imagine a kind of impenetrable glass wall put up around you in an area of several square miles. You can look out - people and animals seem to be dead. You cannot get out. There is not communication, the radio is dead, the telephone as well. There is only you, a small cabin in the wood, little provision - the end of summer is near. This book offers no explanation whatsoever, it doesn't have a real end. At some time there is no more paper for this women to continue writing down her experience. It is truly scary reading.
Well, I was strongly reminded of this book when looking out of our window this morning. Usually we have a beautiful view towards a wood on a neighboring hill which just now turns all shades of red and yellow. Today however, the world ended all of a sudden just behind our shrubs. We didn't see the sun all day.



Ein Blick heute morgen aus dem Fenster hat mich stark an den Roman "Die Wand" von Marlen Haushofer erinnert. In diesem Buch findet sich eine Frau plötzlich umgeben von einer Wand wie aus unzerstörbarem Glas. Draußen scheinen die Menschen und Tiere tot zu sein. Es gibt keine Kommunikation, das Radio ist tot, das Telefon ebenso. Sie ist allein in einem Ferienhäuschen im Wald, der Sommer geht zu Ende. Es gibt keine Erklärung, nur eine Schilderung, wie sie mit der Situation fertig wird. Es gibt auch kein wirkliches Ende - irgendwann geht das Papier, auf dem sie schreibt, zur Neige. Faszinierende, aber auch beunruhigende Lektüre.

After having installed the Neo Counter I realized that quite a lot of my readers are from Germany. Therefore I will take it up to post in English and in German as I did in my last blog, hopefully everybody will then understand me. I will not translate word for word though.

Seitdem ich den Neo Counter installiert habe, weiß ich, daß doch eine ganze Reihe meiner Leser/innen aus Deutschland sind. Ich werde daher wieder wie in meinem alten Blog die Posts sowohl auf Englisch als auch auf Deutsch schreiben, so daß mich hoffentlich jeder verstehen wird. Allerdings habe ich nicht vor, Wort für Wort zu übersetzen.

New book

Since I bought a Zutter bind it all I can make my own wirebound books! This is something I always wanted to do. It is a really great tool.
This book is for a friend of mine who has been my friend since school! So she is the oldest (with regard to friendship) and best friend, although we have been living about 200 miles apart for the last 15 years. But somehow, on the scarce occasions we meet (and we try to do so twice a year) we seem to able to pick up our conversation just where we left it. I can only show the cover, because I am afraid she might be looking at this blog on a regular basis. I will show the rest of the pages when her birthday is past.

Paper quilts

At present I am following a class for paper quilts with Terri Stegmiller from Two Creative Studios. This is the first result. The fabric paper is made by gluing silk paper to a muslin background. The resulting paper can be painted and stamped and has a beautiful texture. It takes some exercise though to quilt it, the handling is quite different from fabric. What I like most is that you can incorporate other paper (or other stuff) into the process. I worked some old paper from a French dictionary into the background of this quilt.
