A good friend of mine celebrated 40 years of steering her bookshop through more or less troubled times. For her celebration of this event I gave her a mixed media canvas with tags, all of them bearing quotes regarding books. She was quite taken aback with it :D

When I had made my first Hawaiian quilt I thought that I would never make one again - it is quite a lot of work. However, when my stepmother told me that this quilt was the most beautiful one she had ever seen it was clear that I would have to make one for her as well. So I made another one, and she is now the proud owner of the above quilt.

It was - as typical for a Hawaiian quilt - hand appliqued and hand quilted heavily. I have been working at this quilt for 7 months every day.

This is what I have been working in for the last four years. It is a combination of art journal and sketchbook where I have been trying new materials and techniques as well as making memories of special events. I love the way it looks and shows how my art has been developing during that time.

--------
After a Workshop with Elsbeth Nusser-Lampe I finished a textile book themed Helleborus. This was a playground for quite a lot of mixed media techniques: Felting, painting, printing, melting, hand stitching and quilting all went into it and I am quite satisfied with the outcome.
-------------
This blog has been very important to me once, but I have been neglecting it for the last 1 1/2 years! I Wonder wheather I should start posting again...
2013 was a very important year travelwise for my husband and myself. We finally made that dream journey to Australia & New Zealand and have been "en Route" for nearly two months. The artistic result was a completed Moleskine. In the autumn we travelled to Tuscany once again.
My artistic endeavours have been turning to paint & paper more and more often. I do still quilt and stitch, however, Mixed Media is now my main area of interest, especially art journals. And I try once again to master watercolor. So despite our extensive journeying there is quite a lot going on. So I will relaunch this blog.Angelika Westermannhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05319727992399747779noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33101013.post-42899859554533333672012-09-26T16:24:00.000+02:002012-09-26T16:24:15.601+02:00Altered book

A friend of mine who was not treated well by life received this altered book made by me. It is filled with positive quotes, soothing colors and beautiful fotos. The glass on the cover contains lavender buds and a stripe with the quote "Have the courage to live, everybody can die".

The heart sitting in the niche was placed into a tiny piece of a sprig of thyme she had brought me as a gift some time ago. She sure was pleased with this present since she saw that it was made especially for her. Now I think I will have to make a book for myself - so far I gave each and every one away.

These days I feel as if we were more travelling than staying at home. Our latest journey took us to Scandinavia, to Norway to be exact. I absolutely love that country - the landscape as well as the cities. Only being creative is a bit of an impossibility - doing a travel journal is the best there is.

-------------------------------------------------------------

The book you see above is an altered book about the joy a garden can bring. The original book contained poetry from Casanova - I didn't even know until now that this man wrote poems.

What I loved about this book is that one of these poems was about roses so that I was able to combine the orignal text with the pictures and other embellishments.

--------------------------------------
For the next lessons of Dale Anne's "positive thinking everyday" class I had to make a new journal. This is an altered book - I liked the cover with it`s marbled paper so much that I only changed the spine and added the blossom and ribbons.

The text of the original book can bee seen under the added paint and journaling, giving it an additional layer that looks a little mystical.

I did it. I made myself a bag. For me this is somewhat a surprise - so far I had not inclination to make myself a bag. However, my latest quilting project left me with several pieces of fabric and suddenly I just wanted to make something other than a quilt. What better to do than sew a bag? An issue of Cloth, Paper, Scissors "Gift" had an instruction, and with several alterations this is the result.Angelika Westermannhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05319727992399747779noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33101013.post-35142044041661688902012-05-17T23:14:00.000+02:002012-05-17T23:14:02.750+02:00Positive Gedanken

Traveling in April is taking risks. We had everything from dazzling sun to pouring rain and loads of snow. Sometimes that was allright - as in the Dolomites.

Sometimes it was a plain nuisance as in Tuscany where when we entered a small restaurant to drink a cup of espresso the first thing they brought us were - guest towels. Nevertheless the journey was very interesting with lots of inspiration and new experiences.

This is my Vision Card for March. It should help me to slow down. The first two months have me kind of hyperventilating a little. What with my job, journeys, sports, workshops and my own creative work it suddenly is too much. I just have to realize that I cannot follow every interesting link, cannot participate in every workshop. But I have the feeling that time is running......
Angelika Westermannhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05319727992399747779noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33101013.post-36823816850826430382012-02-29T21:31:00.001+01:002012-02-29T21:31:14.883+01:00Positive Gedanken

Finally it all starts coming together. The positive thinking group (art journaling), the tips from the Creative Explorers' Club and the lettering class all contribute to this spread. It really was time to use all those different techniques I have been learning the last months.

Venice - a place to dream of, isn't it? I have been enthralled by its spell and really hope to return there one day soon. Most of all I dream of being in Venice during winter when there aren't as many people about. I suppose in winter the athmosphere of the city's slow decay will be more acute. These crumbling palaces really are something I adore.
This certainly would have been a spread to use a map as part of the background as shown in Jill Berry' blog, but I didn't think of it soon enough. There is a map of Venice in my collection somewhere exactly for that sort of purpose - I only have to find it...Angelika Westermannhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05319727992399747779noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33101013.post-74991807192255115812012-02-12T16:05:00.001+01:002012-02-12T16:05:29.085+01:00Damask

Looking at this I can hardly believe that I carved the stamp myself. It doesn't look really sharp which is the result of stamping on a very irregular and coarse watercolor paper. The image looks a little distressed which is exactly what I had intended for this project.Angelika Westermannhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05319727992399747779noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33101013.post-8596104650388316192012-02-08T22:14:00.001+01:002012-02-08T22:14:34.996+01:00

These are the Chevron stamps I made. Unfortunately the stamped image isn't really clear. Making you own stamps is really addictive - the possibilities are endless. At present I am carving an alphabeth (only large fonts and numbers to begin with).
Ich will in diesem Jahr einfach etwas intensiver an meiner künstlerischen Entwicklung arbeiten.

There were no posts these last months - not that there wasn't a lot going on. I joined Dale Anne Potter's group "positive thinking everyday", am a member of the "Creative Expolorer's Club" of Linda Matthews and I am learning to carve my own stamps with Julie Fei van Balzer. Plus I am busily sewing the first quilt that will finally be for myself. Did I mention that I try to work out how to use Photoshop as well?
Linda Matthews introduced me to the idea of "vision cards" and I am trying to work with them which is a whole new world for me. Especially when dealing with more abstract concepts this prooves to be quite difficult. For 2012 I decided on "commit" which in this connections means that I want to commit myself to my artistic development.

No idea how this could happen, but I haven't been blogging for months. This must be a case of life getting the better of me. There is nearly a month gone from this year and I hardly dare to wish you all a good and healthy 2012. But is is never too late for good wishes. As well as for good intentions - I will be blogging more regularly from now on - promise!Angelika Westermannhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05319727992399747779noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33101013.post-89220965454710712692011-10-12T14:35:00.001+02:002011-10-12T14:35:12.852+02:00

My best and oldest friend - from school - is going to be 60 these days. I made her a quilt. Since I wanted this piece to convey lots of energy I chose to work in all grades of red, a color I normally don't work with.

I love old photos, especially these old cabinet cards. Usually I do not use the originals but work with copies. This piece however really stars an original. I wonder who those people were on those photos. At those times photos were something very special. You dressed up for the occasion. Nearly everybody is looking very solemn. Why was this young woman's photo made? Was it a memory for her lover? Was it for her parents? And who was she herself? These old photos are truly like looking through a tiny peephole into the past.Angelika Westermannhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05319727992399747779noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33101013.post-63700381295625224252011-08-02T11:47:00.000+02:002011-08-02T11:47:21.312+02:00ATC-Tausch

This is the second swap I participated in, organized by Lenna. This time we swapp ATCs titled "color my world...." It is the first time I created ATCs mainly with paper (apart from the embellishments), so far I only made textile ATCs. Since I am fascinated by everything vintage I colored my world "tan", this mild brown reminiscent of old photos.
At long last my books from Lenna's swap arrived. It took quite a long time for them to find their way from the States to me. But waiting for them was well worth while. These little books are really beautiful, each in its own way and very different from each other. The smallest one is the Little Hear Book. One is an accordion book that I will decorate myself - the colors are just beautiful. The photos cannot really show the beauty of these little works of art.The artist who created these little books are Catherine L. Mommsen, Linda Kunsman, Barbara DeLisle und Laura Hummel. There is a video where you can get a glimpse of all participants: Little Book Swap

"digital studio" by Somerset first showed me the possibilities of digital layering - you can really work with everything, not only your own photos, but paper and virtually everything that can be put on a scanner. Digital scrapbooking really is only the beginning.
I am no computer geek at all and I felt intimidated. But I just could not leave it alone, so I downloaded a test version of Photoshop and started playing. The first result (see above) is not a work of art, but is prooves that dummies like myself can scrapbook digitally.

All four little books for the swap are finished. Other artists have made four identical book - Lenna keeps us well informed - however, I decided to make four individual books. One was made with German stamps, another was made from one piece of paper which you cut and fold and it suddenly forms a little book, which even has two niches where you can put a tag. This was so much fun that I will keep making the one or the other little book, especially since they make such beautiful little gifts. And I am truly impatient to receive my four little books from the States. The pictures I saw so far were really amazing.
